John was the youngest son of William Slack and Mary Jane.
John and Hilda got married in 1920 and went on to have three children two boys and a girl.

At the time of his marriage John was living with his parents at number 2 Surrey Street, New Herrington and he was working as a joiner with his brother Robert. The family story is that during the Great War 1914-18 he was in the Army stationed in Barnard Castle making wooden wheels for gun carriages with his brother Robert. At the moment I can't find any record of the Army Regiment they were both in. They are reported as saying that they were bored during this time - but in hindsight they seem to have been very lucky to have not suffered the hardships of the Somme or Ypres. There is also a report that the two brothers worked together after the war and the workshop was in Newbottle, near Houghton - Le - Spring. Later in life when his son Alan would take him out in the car for the day with the family, he would insist that they go to Barnard Castle.
Five years after his marriage he gives up his trade to run the local Post Office in Front Street New Herrington. John and Hilda had kept the Post Office in Front Street, New Herrington for more than 34 years when they retired in 1959. They lived at number 3 Margaret Terrace, New Herrington when their youngest son Alan was born and continued to live there after they gave up the Post Office and retired.
Their daughter Irene (Rene) went on to keep the Post Office after John and Hilda retired.

Irene was always known as plain Rene. She was the first child of John and Hilda Slack .
Rene and her husband Albert ran the Post Office in New Herrington after her parents rerired.

Alan was very keen on Rover Cars and was a member of the Rover owners Club. He is shown in the photographs with his Rover P3 and trophies. Over the years he had also owned a Rover P2, P4 and P6, the Rover P4 and P6 he regularly took on runs and competed at the car shows. He also had two more passions - namely dogs always border collies, and he was also a life long Sunderland AFC football fan and season ticket holder for many years.
