William was the son of
William
and Maria he married Ellen Kerridge in 1915 and
they also had a son named William , who was born shortly after his fathers death
in France.
William joined the 565 Mechanical Transport Coy and obtained the rank of
serjeant [sic] before becoming another victim of the first world war. He died on
active duty and is commemorated at the Sunken road cemetery at Boisleux St Marc
near Arrass in northern France.
The 565 Mechanical Transport Coy was formed August 1915. Ammunition Column for
31st Brigade RGA. Later served as VI Corps Siege Park.
He earned the Croix de guerre (Belgium) possibly posthumously.
Williams army
number was DM2/075531.
The irony of Williams death is that it was so close to the end of the war and
also the fact that his son William was born in the December 1918 after his
fathers death in the September two months earlier.
At the time of his death his wife was living in Bolton Lancs at 82 Eskrick
Street.
